For Sherman Hay II

Now from under cloud-heights

sea rosed white light-ghosts

in wave-sheet shatter-shine

sea       for me forever yours

shored ancestors, sandstone-locked,

wrestle and twine          arched in contest

hip-contoured, back or breast weird

eroding, exposing saga

            stone folded, bowing     etched self-symbolizing

together spray-fall hands            beat salt thunder,

clasped turned slab        warp mineral,

unfill shore-worn heads             sea-borne stone wherethrough air bores

waves grasp sun,           split and crash rays,                   hurl flame

Stone altar holds bright, still blue eye    among welling waves,

caught and gathered light into its circle,

as you envisioned eye out of chaos

                                                            pooling out from what center

eye pooling,                  rippling sight-surface                 seen sky

till hour of sea brighter than sky                         your being-beyond-here

                                                                                    left by theft of sun

sandstone          conglomerate past,        compounded fate
